This Changed my Perspective on Writing (and it might not be what you think!)

One marketing message changed how I think about storytelling forever.

Have you ever seen a marketing campaign that truly stuck with you?
I saw ad recently that didn’t just catch my eye – it made me stop, think, and feel.

It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t gimmicky. It wasn’t trying too hard.
It simply told a story.
One that felt personal, real, and deeply meaningful.

This was a few weeks ago before Lent started. I was scrolling through my feed when a video from Hallow made m pause. It wasn’t just selling a product. It was selling a vision—something you could believe in.

What vision? Hope. Redemption. Purpose.

Faith-based storytelling works because it connects to something deeper. Whether you’re selling a product, a mission, or an idea, the brands that make an impact aren’t just selling—they’re serving.

The best marketing isn’t just about catchy slogans or data-driven strategies.
It’s about storytelling that speaks to the soul.

How can you apply this to your writing?

1️⃣ Start with a Core Message (What’s the Bigger Truth?)

  • Define the deeper purpose behind your message.
  • Ask: What belief, value, or transformation does this story reinforce?
  • Example: Instead of just promoting a product, highlight hope, perseverance, redemption, or service.

2️⃣ Identify the Emotional Hook (What Will Make Readers Feel Something?)

  • Open with a relatable moment, challenge, or question.
  • Show real struggles and transformation, not just the solution.
  • Example: Instead of “This brand donates a portion of their profits,” tell the story of a specific person impacted.

3️⃣ Make It Personal & Relatable

  • Use first-person experiences or stories that feel real.
  • Create characters (or brand personas) that people see themselves in.
  • Example: A marketing campaign about community can focus on one individual’s story to make it personal.

4️⃣ Show, Don’t Just Tell (Use Visual & Emotional Language)

  • Paint the scene—what did the moment feel like?
  • Use sensory details and active voice.
  • Example: Instead of “The organization helped families,” try to paint a picture that puts the reader in the moment.

5️⃣ Lead with Service, Not Just Selling

  • Instead of focusing on what you want from the audience, focus on what they’ll gain from the message.
  • Ask: How does this story serve, inspire, or uplift?
  • Example: Instead of “Buy this book,” maybe try “This book will help you reconnect with what makes you happy.”

6️⃣ Use Universal Themes to Connect with a Wider Audience

  • Faith-based storytelling can focus on shared values like:
    Hope → Overcoming adversity
    Redemption → Second chances
Service → Giving back and making an impact
Purpose → Living for something bigger than yourself

Faith-based storytelling is about connecting people to something bigger than themselves. Whether you’re writing an ad, a blog, or a brand story, focusing on meaning, transformation, and values will always create a deeper impact.

Ready to put these steps into action? Next time you write a piece of content, ask yourself: Am I selling, or am I serving?
